Get ready for a game-changer in the world of renewable energy! A massive 20 MW wind turbine has taken its place offshore, and it's a true giant among giants.
On January 13th, a groundbreaking moment occurred as this powerful turbine was installed in the waters off southern Fujian, China. This event marks a significant milestone, as it's the first time a wind turbine of this magnitude has been deployed at sea, not just in China but globally, according to China Three Gorges (CTG).
The location of this impressive installation is more than 30 kilometers from the coast, in waters deeper than 40 meters. Imagine the engineering feat required to place such a massive structure in such challenging conditions!
This turbine is a true behemoth, with a rotor diameter of an astonishing 300 meters and blades stretching 147 meters long. Its swept area is equivalent to a whopping 10 standard football fields, and its hub height reaches a staggering 174 meters, comparable to a 58-story building. With this size, it's no surprise that the 20 MW model is expected to generate over 80 GWh of electricity annually, enough to power approximately 44,000 households, as CTG proudly announced on January 14th.
But here's where it gets even more impressive: the new model boasts a lightweight design, with the weight per megawatt of the entire unit, including the nacelle, hub, and blades, coming in at less than 40 tonnes. That's more than 20% lighter than the industry average, according to CTG. This innovative design not only reduces the strain on the structure but also makes installation and maintenance more efficient.
The turbine's intelligent monitoring system is another standout feature. It incorporates a multi-dimensional perception and early safety warning system, with integrated LiDAR and blade root load sensors. This ensures the unit can operate autonomously and safely in unattended offshore scenarios, a true testament to the advancements in wind energy technology.
This installation follows in the footsteps of the world's first 16 MW offshore wind turbine, which was deployed in the Pingtan waters of Fujian in 2023, also a project by CTG and Goldwind. The two companies, along with Mingyang Smart Energy, are leading the charge in pushing the boundaries of single-unit capacity installations.
Mingyang demonstrated its prowess by installing its 16 MW offshore wind turbine prototype shortly after CTG and Goldwind in 2023. In 2024, the company took it a step further by installing a 20 MW prototype at an onshore test site in Hainan, China.
The 20 MW turbine's installation is part of the Renewable Energy Technology project under the National Key Research and Development Programme. It was selected into the fifth batch of major technological equipment for the first set in the energy field by the National Energy Administration. This project is a collaborative effort, guided and supported by the National Energy Administration and the Fujian Provincial Development and Reform Commission, and brought to life by the Three Gorges Group and Goldwind Technology.
