While rising component costs affect all gaming hardware manufacturers, analysts suggest Valve is uniquely vulnerable. Large console giants like Sony and Microsoft have significant negotiating power due to their massive order volumes. In contrast, the Steam Machine, a niche product, lacks the same procurement benefits, leaving Valve to bear the brunt of escalating costs.
Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad highlights this disparity, noting that Valve's position in the hardware space, even with the Steam Deck's success, is not as dominant as Sony or Microsoft. This lack of scale could impact their ability to secure favorable supply contracts.
The timing of Valve's supply chain commitments is also crucial. Tech Insights analyst James Sanders points out that it's unclear whether Valve locked in supply contracts for the Steam Machine or if supply can be diverted from the successful Steam Deck. Sony and Microsoft, on the other hand, likely secured more favorable component pricing before the current spike, according to Van Dreunen.
However, the Steam Machine's design offers some pricing flexibility. Its smaller size could reduce packaging and shipping costs for Valve, and selling directly through the web and Steam eliminates retailer markups.
"Valve was probably aiming for a much lower price and hoped the component issue would be temporary," says Cole. "But it's looking more like a long-term challenge."
