The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has officially launched an investigation following reports of 36 cases involving children who have shown symptoms indicative of poisoning from the cereulide toxin, linked to certain batches of infant formula that were recently recalled.
This serious health concern has prompted the agency, together with its partner organizations, to gather reports from various regions across the UK about young patients who consumed the impacted formula products.
The majority of these cases have been reported in England, where 24 incidents were recorded. Scotland reported seven cases, while Wales had three. Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies each noted a single case of concern.
These affected children exhibited symptoms consistent with cereulide toxin poisoning after consuming the specific batches of recalled formula.
The recall initiative took effect on January 5, when the Food Standards Agency (FSA) announced that Nestlé was voluntarily withdrawing multiple batches of 12 different SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula products as a safety precaution due to potential contamination by cereulide toxin.
But here’s where it gets controversial... Just four days later, on January 9, the recall was expanded to include additional products with varying expiry dates, indicating the urgency of the situation. On January 24, Danone joined in this recall effort, retracting one batch of its Aptamil First Infant Formula after confirming its contamination with cereulide. Both companies acted swiftly to ensure that these potentially harmful products were removed from all sales platforms throughout the UK.
What exactly is cereulide? This potent toxin is produced by specific strains of the Bacillus cereus bacteria, which can create significant challenges for infant feeding practices. Notably, cereulide exhibits remarkable heat resistance, meaning traditional methods of preparing formula—like using boiling water—are ineffective at neutralizing it.
Parents who have been using the affected formula are strongly advised to stop immediately, even if their child has not shown any signs of illness. This urgent recommendation comes from the FSA, which emphasizes the importance of safety in these matters. Parents whose infants were prescribed this formula should consult with a pharmacist or healthcare provider before making any changes to their feeding practices.
