Donald Trump has made a striking statement, declaring that it is "extremely perilous" for the United Kingdom to deepen its ties with China. This comment comes as Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is engaged in a visit to Beijing, where he aims to reshape the diplomatic relationship between the UK and China.
The former US president's remarks were in response to newly announced agreements following a meeting between Sir Keir and Chinese President Xi Jinping. This three-day diplomatic trip emphasizes enhancing business interactions and investments between the two nations.
When asked about Britain's increasing commercial relations with China, Trump asserted, "It’s very dangerous for them to do that." His statement was made during the premiere of a documentary featuring his wife, Melania, adding an intriguing layer to his comments amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
This reaction follows Sir Keir's optimistic assessment of the UK's relationship with China, which he described as being in a "good, strong place" after his discussions with Xi at the Great Hall of the People this past Thursday. The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of their conversations, stating that these "very good meetings" yielded the level of engagement he had anticipated. He emphasized that the UK has considerable strengths to offer in this partnership while addressing topics ranging from organized crime cooperation to illegal immigration.
Chris Torrens, chair of the British Chamber of Commerce in China, commended Sir Keir's visit, labeling it a "successful" endeavor. He remarked on the importance of the UK looking towards China, noting that it is among the UK’s significant trading partners. Torrens further pointed out that several Western leaders have recently visited Beijing or are planning to do so soon, including Trump, who is expected to travel there in April.
Interestingly, while the US has been known to impose sanctions and tariffs on countries engaging with China, Torrens mentioned that the US is also likely to pursue its own deals with China later this year, despite its current stance toward other nations.
Earlier this week, Trump threatened to levy tariffs on Canada if it proceeded with economic agreements made during its leader Mark Carney's recent visit to Beijing. While reflecting on the UK's dealings with China, he remarked that it is "even more dangerous, I think, for Canada," highlighting concerns about Canada's economic situation and suggesting that seeking solutions through China might not be prudent.
After his engagements in Beijing, Prime Minister Starmer is set to head to Shanghai before continuing on to Tokyo for a working dinner with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
However, not everyone is in agreement with Sir Keir’s approach. Opposition MPs have voiced their discontent, with shadow home secretary Chris Philp accusing him of bowing to President Xi and compromising national security for minimal economic benefits from China.
According to the Department for Business and Trade, the United States emerged as the UK's largest trading partner in 2025, while China ranked as the fourth largest, underscoring the complex dynamics at play in international trade.
