Tennessee’s football program is making waves with a bold defensive overhaul, and it’s all thanks to new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. But here’s where it gets controversial: is bringing in familiar faces the key to success, or does it limit fresh perspectives? Let’s dive in.
In a move that’s turning heads, Tennessee has officially hired three assistant coaches with deep ties to Knowles, signaling a new era for the Vols’ defense. The hires include Anthony Poindexter, former Penn State co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach, who steps into the role of co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach. Joining him is Andrew Jackson, previously Penn State’s assistant defensive line coach, now Tennessee’s LEOs coach. Rounding out the trio is Michael Hunter Jr., a graduate assistant and defensive back assistant from Ohio State, who takes on the role of cornerbacks coach. Notably, defensive line coach Rodney Garner and linebackers coach William Inge are staying put, providing some continuity amidst the changes.
Head coach Josh Heupel couldn’t contain his excitement, stating, ‘We are thrilled about the experienced defensive staff we’ve assembled as we kick off the New Year. This group has a proven track record of excellence in recruiting, player development, and coaching techniques, both in the Big Ten and SEC. They’re already hard at work with Coach Knowles to restore the defensive standard Tennessee fans expect.’
And this is the part most people miss: While Poindexter, Jackson, and Hunter bring familiarity with Knowles’ system, their individual achievements are equally impressive. Poindexter, a College Football Hall of Fame inductee and Super Bowl champion, is a powerhouse in developing safety talent. At Penn State, he mentored four safeties who became NFL Draft picks, three of whom were selected in the first three rounds. His teams consistently ranked among the top in interceptions, total defense, and scoring defense.
Jackson, meanwhile, has a knack for maximizing defensive line potential. His 2023 season at West Virginia saw the Mountaineers lead the Big 12 in sacks and rank second in tackles for loss. Hunter, fresh off a national championship with Ohio State, has a unique perspective as both a former player and coach, having worked with Knowles at Oklahoma State and Ohio State.
Here’s the kicker: Poindexter was the one who replaced Tim Banks at Penn State after Banks left for Tennessee five years ago. Now, he’s back to replace Banks again, this time at Tennessee. Talk about full circle!
But what does this mean for the Vols? With Knowles at the helm and his trusted allies by his side, Tennessee is betting big on a defensive resurgence.
