Don't let your Google Stadia controller become a relic! December 31st, 2025, is the final call to rescue your Stadia gamepad, and trust me, there's never been a better moment. Just last month, I discovered that this controller has found new life as a fully functional device within Steam and SteamOS.
Originally designed to stream games from Google's cloud servers, the Stadia controller's fate seemed sealed when Google shut down Stadia in January 2023. But, in a move that deserves applause, Google offered refunds and provided a way to repurpose the controller as a standard Bluetooth gamepad.
Back in late October, while visiting Valve headquarters, I inquired about Steam's support for the Stadia controller. At the time, the focus seemed to be elsewhere.
So, imagine my surprise when I found that Steam now fully supports the Stadia gamepad, making every button useful! The Google Assistant key is now a customizable M1 macro button, and the screenshot button works perfectly in SteamOS. The Stadia button itself acts as an Xbox button, granting access to essential Steam Deck shortcuts.
On a desktop, the Stadia button can even launch Steam's Big Picture Mode.
Now, let's be clear: it's not the best gamepad available for Steam. It lacks features like gyro and back buttons. Also, it doesn't automatically shut off when the Steam Deck sleeps, and the 3.5mm jack for headphones is a no-go.
But here's where it gets controversial... If you snagged a Stadia Controller, perhaps even for free, it's a fantastic secondary gamepad, and it might even be your primary choice for certain games. The D-pad is precise, the sticks and triggers are smooth, and the face buttons are responsive.
And the best part? Saving your gamepad is incredibly simple through December 31st. Just connect it to your computer, visit Google's official page, and follow the instructions.
While there's a slim chance Google might extend the deadline, I wouldn't count on it.
So, what do you think? Are you going to save your Stadia controller? Let me know in the comments if you've already done it, or if you're planning to give it a shot. And if you have any questions, feel free to ask!
