A new health warning has been issued for residents of South Australia following the detection of measles in an infant who contracted the illness while abroad. This highly contagious disease can spread rapidly, and the infant visited several locations while potentially infectious, raising concerns for public health.
Last Sunday, the infant attended the ‘St Eufemia D’Aspromonte’ Italian Festival at the Flinders Park Football Club from 2 PM to 4 PM. During this time, festival-goers may have been exposed to the virus if they were in close proximity to the child.
In addition to the festival, the infant made two visits to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The first was to the SA Pathology Collection Centre on Wednesday from 4 PM to 4:45 PM, followed by a visit to the hospital's Emergency Department from 4:15 PM to 5:10 PM and again later that evening from 6:40 PM to 7:10 PM.
Health officials from SA Health are urging individuals who have not received full vaccinations and who were present at these locations during the specified times to be vigilant for any signs of measles. If symptoms develop, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional. This is particularly important because measles begins with general symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, and sore eyes. These initial signs are often followed by a distinctive rash that typically starts on the head and gradually spreads downwards.
"If you suspect that you might have measles, please contact your doctor before visiting their office so that necessary precautions can be taken to prevent the transmission of the virus to others," an SA Health spokesperson emphasized.
Fortunately, health officials have noted that the locations in question do not currently pose an ongoing risk. This announcement comes just a day after another alert was issued regarding multiple sites in Adelaide where a different individual infected with measles had traveled, including rides on two trams and a visit to a crowded swimming center on Australia Day.
Though these two cases are not connected, they highlight an alarming trend as this marks the third reported instance of measles in South Australia since the beginning of the year, with the first case reported earlier last month.
