Nedimyer's team is taking proactive measures, relocating 400 elkhorn and staghorn corals to safer locations, including their deep-water nursery and land-based facilities in West Palm Beach and Tampa. They plan to return next week for more, but the largest corals, up to 45 inches across, will remain in the water for now, as researchers anticipate their spawning in early August.
These larger corals are of particular concern, as they are the same species declared functionally extinct. Nedimyer describes them as "hanging on by a thread." The plan is to collect their spawn and nurture it in lab tanks, hoping to grow new corals that can be replanted along the reef.

Nedimyer shares that fully bleached corals were observed spawning in 2023, giving scientists a chance to potentially preserve at least one more generation.
