She reveals that many patients face logistical hurdles when it comes to in-clinic testing, leading to delays in the process. Embarrassment is another factor that keeps some men from seeking timely testing. But here's where it gets innovative: the new kit separates motile sperm from non-motile sperm at collection, allowing for accurate analysis days later.
And this is the part most people miss: the kit provides the same comprehensive information as an in-clinic analysis, including sperm count, movement, and morphology. Dr. Keith Jarvi, a urologist at Mount Sinai Hospital, highlights the long-standing issue of uneven access to male infertility testing across Ontario. He explains that the new kit aims to bridge this gap, especially for those in rural and remote areas.
But there's a catch. Traditional testing requires men to provide a sample near a lab due to the rapid decline in sperm motility after collection. The new kit, however, addresses this challenge by enabling accurate analysis even days after collection. Flow Labs' president, Murray Klien, emphasizes the kit's ability to bring laboratory-quality testing directly to patients, with the cost covered by OHIP for those with a doctor's requisition.
The company is currently rolling out the service, with plans to expand and eventually turn a profit. As the service grows, it promises to significantly improve access to fertility testing for men in Northern Ontario, saving them time and bringing healthcare closer to home.
